Al-Maghreb
NYC Photographer Shares Treasures of Morocco in Latest Exhibition

Japanese-born artist Lieh Sugai will debut her newest series of photographs Al-Maghreb: The Place of Sunsets on Friday, March 6th, 2009 with an opening reception at the Pratt Institute CCPS Gallery. The collection serves as an on-going photo journal inspired by her recent travels to Morocco.

"I wasn’Äôt sure what to expect when I first visited Morocco in the winter of 2006 but the impact was immediate and overwhelming: the sounds, the scenery, the aromas and the faces were dizzying, magical and fleeting. Suddenly I understood why this part of the world is called Al-Maghreb or The Place of Sunsets."

"But Morocco is more than just one place. It is varied and multicultural and changes wildly from one town to the next. From modern, cosmopolitan Casablanca to the charming coastal town of Essauira to the rugged timeless Atlas Mountains, each stop in my journey had a flavor of its own and a people as distinct as the terrain who called it home. Encountering these people, their strength and purity is what makes me return time and again."

The collection twenty or so photographs will be on display in the Pratt Institute CCPS Gallery located at 144 West 14th Street in Manhattan from March 6-March 31.

Lieh Sugai is a Japanese-born photographer with a degree in Graphic Design from Pratt Institute in New York City. She has exhibited widely in New York at the M3 Projects and the Rabbit Hole Gallery in DUMBO and at Pratt Institute CCPS Gallery in Manhattan.
